Please read this document carefully before your virtual consultation. Under the AHPRA Shared Code of Conduct (Section 4.2), informed consent is a voluntary decision about your healthcare made with complete knowledge and understanding of the benefits, risks, and clinical processes involved.
1. Description of Telehealth and Virtual Care Services
Telehealth at MEO Rehab & Performance involves the delivery of professional physiotherapy assessment, active recovery programming, and athletic coaching using secure, technology-based communication systems. This includes:
- Real-time video consultations.
- Secure digital messaging, emails, and phone communication.
- The delivery and monitoring of customized rehabilitation programs.
2. Benefits and Risks of Telehealth Consultations
We want you to fully understand the clinical context of technology-based consultations so you can participate actively and safely in your care:
- Clinical Benefits:
- Convenient access to specialized, athletic-focused physiotherapy from any location.
- Continuous care and structured movement programming tailored specifically to your sport and training schedule.
- The ability to analyze your exercise techniques directly within your own training environment.
- Clinical and Technical Risks:
- Assessment Limitations: Unlike in-person consultations, a physical touch or clinical palpation of joints, tissues, or muscles is impossible. The practitioner must rely entirely on your subjective descriptions of pain/discomfort, visual movement assessments, and your ability to demonstrate specific physical tests.
- Technology Dependencies: Digital consultations may be delayed, interrupted, or disrupted by internet connectivity drops, hardware failures, or software glitches.
- Data Security: While MEO implements advanced digital security measures, there is an inherent risk of data intercept associated with any online transmission.
3. Patient Obligations for Safe Virtual Care
To ensure your clinical safety and protect your privacy during a virtual session, you agree to:
- Establish a Private Physical Space: Choose a quiet, private, and well-lit indoor environment for your consultation to maintain your personal dignity and privacy.
- Prepare Your Space: Ensure you have adequate floor space to move freely and safely, free of tripping hazards, pets, or obstacles.
- Appropriate Training Wear: Wear suitable athletic clothing that allows the practitioner to visually assess your joint movement, posture, and muscle alignment (e.g., shorts for lower-limb issues, singlet for upper-limb issues).
- Accurate Disclosure: Provide truthful, up-to-date, and complete information regarding your health, medical history, current symptoms, and any discomfort felt during movements.
4. Emergency and Safety Procedures
Because telehealth is delivered remotely, MEO is professionally obligated to establish an emergency action plan for every virtual consultation to manage risk in your physical location:
- Physical Location Verification: At the commencement of each video session, you must confirm your exact physical address.
- Emergency Contact Details: You must provide the name and phone number of a designated local emergency contact person who can be reached if an accident or injury occurs during exercise.
- Local Emergency Services: In the event of a clinical emergency during a virtual consultation, MEO's standard operating procedure is to guide you or your local contact to contact triple zero (000) or locate your nearest emergency health facility immediately.
5. Privacy, Recording, and AI Scribes
- No Unauthorised Recordings: To protect the privacy and confidentiality of both the patient and practitioner, telehealth sessions must not be audio-recorded or video-recorded by either party without explicit, documented mutual consent.
- Secure Practice Systems: Clinical documentation generated during telehealth consultations is stored in secure, encrypted medical practice software in compliance with Australian digital health guidelines.
- Use of Secure Assistants: If AI scribing technology is utilized to capture clinical logs, it will be done under strict adherence to our Privacy Policy, ensuring complete de-identification of data and direct clinician verification of all notes.
6. Informed Financial Consent
By signing this consent form, you acknowledge that you are fully aware of the consultation fees prior to the commencement of your telehealth service. Fees are claimable under Physiotherapy cover with Australian private health funds, subject to your specific policy guidelines.
7. Right to Refuse or Withdraw Consent
You have the absolute right to refuse or withdraw your consent to telehealth services at any point during your rehabilitation program without prejudice to your ongoing or future treatment. If you choose to withdraw consent, MEO will assist you in:
- Transitioning your care to our in-person treatment options at Pinnacle Fitness Albion.
- Or, if you are remote, providing a professional referral to an in-person healthcare practitioner in your local area.
8. Patient Acknowledgment and Consent
By ticking the consent box on our booking form, you declare that:
- I have read, understood, and had sufficient time to ask questions regarding this Informed Consent for Telehealth.
- I understand the benefits, risks, and limitations of receiving physical rehabilitation advice remotely.
- I agree to provide accurate physical location and emergency contact details before each session.
- I voluntarily consent to participate in telehealth consultations with Mitch Scott (Registered Physiotherapist).
